Ten of Swords
“I release what has ended, trusting that renewal is already on its way.”
Upright
- rock bottom
- an ending
- release
- the worst has passed
Ten swords lie across a fallen figure beneath a dark sky, yet at the horizon, the sun is already beginning to rise. This is the tarot's symbol of a definitive ending, a situation that has run its full course and simply cannot continue as it was. It looks dramatic because it is describing something real: a chapter closing completely, sometimes painfully. But the sunrise in the image is not decorative. It's the point of the card. Whatever this ending is, it also clears the ground completely, making room for something that couldn't have existed while the old situation was still standing.
Reversed
- recovery beginning
- resisting the end
- slow healing
- a new dawn
The figure is beginning to stir; the worst has passed and recovery, however slow, is underway. Reversed, the Ten of Swords often marks the early, tender stage of healing after a difficult ending, or it can describe resistance to accepting that something is truly over. If you're clinging to a situation that has already run its course, this card gently suggests it may be time to let it finish so the recovery can actually begin. Either way, know that you are closer to the sunrise than the darkness suggests.
